Essay #1 QUESTION: Write a story with the ending, "If only I had been more careful, that wouldn't have happened". Your story should not be less than 350 words.

Tonight was a cold and stormy night. The doors slammed shut as the rustling sound of the leaves could be heared. The storm had been like this for the past three days. I sat on my bed thinking if I had upset the Gods above in heaven. As I lay my head down soft and gently on my comfy pillow, I wondered if mom and dad were ok. They had gone for a vacation to the bahamas and I had to stay back because of my exams. I wasn't worried about it as I've stayed alone many times.

Suddenly, the lights went out. My heart raced in agony as the storm got worse. I could see lightning lashing onto my gate and the roaring sound of thunder that came along. I pulled myself together and realised I needed to light some candles. So I headed downstairs with my trusty torchlight and worked my way to the storage room. I found the candles and begun to light them all over the house. I couldn't stand the fact that the darkness was playing games with my mind.

An hour had passed till I realised something wasn't right. I felt as if something else besides me was in the house. I panicked. My mind filled with fear but I had to be sure I was right. So, I searched all the rooms on the same floor and found nothing. So I carefully walked down staircase. As I was walking, I realised all the candles that I had lit were put out. I was surprised but aware that there could be someone else in the house. My mind pondered as to how i was going to sneak around without alerting the possibly dangerous stranger.

Then, it happened. As I hid behind one of the room's doors. I saw someone walk by me. He was a huge muscular guy who wore a beard and had hair that was so curly a fly could get stuck if it went through it. I was puzzled. Why would someone want to break into my house, I asked myself. I noticed the man had a huge revolver on his belt. The same one the cops used. I didn't want to stick around and aak questions. I had to call the cops. So I crept towards the phone and thank God it was still working. I made a distressed call and the cops said they would be at my house in five minutes.

As I crept back upstairs, I accidently knocked over a small lamp and it broke. By this time I knew the stranger had been alerted. I was scared and feared for my life. My fears turned into my worst nightmare as I heard a loud noise. I was shot in the chest. I could feel blood oozing all over my shirt. The stranger walked towards me while mumbling words I just couln't understand. I thought I was a dead man. Then a miracle happened just as the stranger was about to finish me off. I heard a second gunshot and the stranger was down. It was the cops who had arrived.

I was rushed to the hospital and the doctors commenced emergency surgery on me to remove the bullet. I was then transferred to the Intensive Care Unit(ICU) as the bullet had hit my lungs and I was unable to breathe properly. My parents rushed back as soon as they got the news. I was lucky to be alive. The doctor had explained that if the bullet had hit me a bit more to the left , it would have hit my heart and I would be dead. Nobody knew who the stranger was or what he wanted. If only I had been more careful, that wouldn't have happened.

Essay #2
I could see by her face that she was really angry. I was almost convinced that I saw steam emitting from her nostril as she tried to go out from recently crashed space ship that was piloted by me from the International Departure Station (IDS) in south Russia.

Slowly, I approached her and apologized. "I'm sorry Lena, I know I should not force the ship to enter the 'worm hole' during low ship energy", I pleaded softly. Actually this was my first experience working as a captain for the Earth Defense Association(EDA) in a very important mission which was to ensure Metaoreon that was Earth traditional enemy cannot use its sub-bases to launch any attack on our controlled areas including Earth and 1.3 Light Years Cube in the center of the Milky Way.

Based on information that our association recently receivd, the sub-bases would be completed in 48 hours from the start of this mission and if it was completed maybe nobody could reach the area because from the information the defense would came out with a fourth generation technology.

Our group consists of 10 elite army soldiers who were commanded by me and my assistant Commander II Captain Lena Kagari. But during the transmission we had some technical problems. We failed reach to the targeted destination and the space ship seemed unable to activate.

"Captain, what should we do? The space ship's control system is definitely damaged". Suddenly the ship technician shocked me from the back. I stunted a while. Again I stared at my assistant hoping for suggestion but there was no reaction from her as I had expected.

"I want you to request help from our nearest ally, Corrono Alliance. Tell them our location and tell to send support as soon as possible." I pleaded after a few minutes thinking. After that, the technician left to announce the decision to other units. But at that time Lena looked at me angrily.

"I don't know why you were selected to handle this important mission since you don't have any experience in real space battle." She said.

"Now look we are in trouble, our distance from the enemy is not secure and the probability they can detect our presence is high. It is not impossible the enemy will attack us first when the ship is not in ready for battle." But before I had the opportunity to explain, the red light and alarm turned on to indicate dangerous objects approaching this space ship. Lena and I quickly entered the Captain's room to prepare for any attacks that might occur. I could see via main screen that there were five black ships moving toward us.

"All units... prepare to attack and Lena please identify the ship whether they are enemy or not." I quickly gave the command. Even though I has passed virtual battle many times but real situation was absolutely different. I didn't have enough time to have deep thought before making a decision.

"Can't activate to battle mode, captain. Some parts of this ship are still malfunctioning." A second after one of my units said these words suddenly our ship shook. The black ships definitely were our enemy. They had started firing without waiting for any discussion from us. From that behavior, I could confirmed that the black ship were Metaoreon 's armies. In this situation, we could do nothing except defend our ship as long as possible. So, I have commanded my units to install our best protection layer around the space ship.

At this time I just hoped a miracle could occur. I tried to hack onto the black ship's system. By applying my knowledge in 'reverse engineering'. I analyzed the signal emitted from the black ships then did reversal techniques to decrypt the signal to form readable data. I looked into the deciphered data and found the 32-bits round key. I entered the key to my special programme to listen to the Control Channel on the black ships. Thanks to God. About 5 minutes later, the programme recovered the password of the black ship's main control system.

After getting the system password, I quickly sent fake instruction to the hacked system caused them to fight each other. At the same time our ally Corrono Alliance arrived and help to destroy the black ships. They also lent a hand to repair the damage on our ship.

"Amazing! I've never before seen someone who is able to control the enemy's system in a short period and to get our ally's help easily like you did". Lena said, after we expressed our thank to Corrono Alliance units.

I Stared into her eyes and replied."It was a great miracle but I think you should accept our General Commander's decision. He would not have chosen me without looking at my qualification".

After I said that, for the first time she flashed me her million-dollar smile. After that, we took 4 days to complete the mission. The Association hoped I would be successful in the mission even though I did not have any experience in battle. And it's now safe for me to say that their hope is well founded

Essay #3
A sample essay entitled ‘A difficult life’
SPM ENGLISH
By JUGDEEP KAUR GILL

“BEING illiterate is like a curse. It closes all doors to your life even before they can be opened!”

My mother’s words rang loud and clear in my mind.

She had literally been plucked from a remote village in India and brought to the then Malaya by my father, a man she had obediently married some sixty years ago.

Being the only daughter of a well-heeled man, she had believed that her aunt had got her a good match. My mother was fair, tall and willowy. Everyone had remarked on her big eyes and thick lashes when she entered her husband’s house as his bride.

The marriage celebrations had gone on for three days and she had yet to see what her groom looked like. As custom dictated, she had kept her head bowed and eyes downcast throughout the numerous ceremonies that went on during the three days.

The fact that her head scarf had been drawn low to cover her face did not make things any easier.

When she was finally introduced to her spouse, she was shocked. He was stocky and quite dark while she was as white as snow, by North Indian standards.

The fate that awaited her shattered all the dreams that her aunt had spun for her, the very aunt who had made the match.

Being the typical Indian bride, she became a dutiful daughter-in-law to her husband’s childless aunt and uncle who had cared for him ever since he had been orphaned at the age of seven.

Life was difficult as there was nothing of the luxury that she had been used to in her father’s house but she did not complain.

When her in-laws, asked her to pawn her jewellery to release their land from mortgage, she did so without question.

When her husband’s aunt insisted that she wove blankets for them, she did so submissively. After all, she was illiterate and her only skills included cooking, sewing and embroidery.

Six months later, her husband announced that they would be leaving India to seek their fortunes in Malaya. She cried for days but remembered her father’s parting words,

“Your husband decides your life for now. Go with God’s blessings.”

The trip to Malaya took almost a week by ship. All sorts of fears tortured her but she did not dare utter a single word for fear of displeasing her husband.

Upon arrival in Penang, they travelled to a little town in Perak where they lived with another uncle until her husband secured a job.

Life in Slim River was not easy. Her husband often left her alone, unaccompanied for days at times as he eked out a living as a lorry driver at a tin mine.

The kind Malay ladies, sensing her loneliness, tried to make small talk with her, despite knowing that she did not understand a word of the local language.

Undeterred, they slowly taught her simple words which she would need in her daily life. This life went on for three years.

There was no electricity or water supply. She did her washing and bathing by the river.

Despite her frail form, she could carry two pails of water all the way home for cooking and drinking. Every night, she cried herself to sleep.

A few months later, she gave birth to a daughter. Her husband had not been pleased and he had refused to see the new child.

He had expected his first born to be a son. His ego had taken a slight dent, but he did not know that there was a worse fate awaiting him – the tin mine ceased operations and he lost his job.

They had no money and no savings. Not about to give up, he decided to take her and their little daughter to the capital.

For the next few years, they lived with his second uncle and his wife who were also childless.

Life for the young couple was no bed of roses. Jobs did not come easily those days and after failing to secure a job, her husband gave in to the demands of his uncle and aunt.

For two meals a day, he had to wash the drains on the five-acre piece of land and cut the grass while she had to do all the tedious household chores.

Without fail, the old woman would insist that she scrub all the brassware (even though it had not been used) with ash every day before beginning the day’s chores.

She had to wash second uncle’s white trousers and white shirts by boiling them in caustic soda over a charcoal fire and then scrubbing then clean before ironing them using a hot coal iron.

Her daily chores kept her busy and she barely had time for her first-born.

The poor child was often hungry as second aunt did not provide them with breakfast. Deprived of essential nutrients, the poor little girl was thin, almost skeletal.

The young couple endured this terrible life for several years. Even when her husband got a job as a watchman she still had to submit to the will of second aunt.

The couple had a second child, a boy, but he died when he was ten months old. Three years later they had me, another girl. This time my father was not so disappointed. I suppose the hard life had made him more accepting.

“Why did you allow these things to happen, ma?” I asked furiously as she related her painful past.

I held her battered hands in mine; the cuticles were swollen and the nails had turned yellow due to all the washing with caustic soda.

“... because I was illiterate and I had no one.”

That was her simple answer. She had no options as she was financially dependent on others for every single need. She could not go out to work as her husband’s uncle and aunt had a reputation to maintain. They were the cream of the town. No one knew or even suspected that she and her husband were being ill-treated. Worse still, she had to tolerate all forms of verbal abuse.

“My father had never raised his voice. He showered me with love after the death of my mother when I was five.”

My father, who himself had lost his mother when he was twenty-six days old and his father when he was seven, could not do much.

I am now thirteen. I know mother is telling me these stories so that I will be resilient. I also know she wants me to study hard so that I will not have to have a difficult life.

As much as I admire my mother and her perseverance in the face of adversity, I will not allow a similar fate to befall me.

The Director,
Ampang Jaya Municipal Council,
Bangunan Mentari,
Ampang Jaya,

SELANGOR.

15 SEPTEMBER 2009

Dear Sir,

Poor Maintenance of Taman Jayadiri

I am writing this letter on behalf of the residents of Taman Jayadiri to complain about the dismal conditions we have been putting up with for the past three months.

2. One of the main grouses of the residents concerns uncollected rubbish (point 1). Initially, rubbish was collected three times a week. However, since June this year the garbage collectors have only been coming once a week. Our litter bins are always filled to the brim and we have no choice but to leave our bags of rubbish next to the bins. The rotting waste causes a terrible stench (point 2). Worse still, stray cats and dogs scatter the rubbish (point 3) while looking for food. This is not only unpleasant but also unhealthy.

3. Most of the drains in Taman Jayadiri are clogged (point 4) with rubbish resulting in the water becoming stagnant. It is not uncommon to see plastic bags, bottles and dry leaves in these drains. There is an urgent need to clear these drains as the stagnant water is an ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes (point 5). The residents are worried as there has been a sharp increase in dengue cases (point 6) in the last two months.

4. The street lights along several roads are also not working (point 7). This has caused several accidents at night (point 8), mostly involving motorcyclists as they are unable to see in the dark. Unfortunately, the dark streets have also led to another problem – an increase in crime (point 9). Several residents, especially women, have fallen victim to snatch thieves.

5. The one and only playground in our area is also not well-maintained (point 10). The grass is overgrown (point 11) as it has not been cut for almost three months. Besides, the playground equipment is damaged (point 12). Many of the see-saws and swings have been spoiled by vandals.

I hope the council will look into our complaints and take prompt action to solve our problems.

Thank you.

Yours faithfully,

RajvindGill

Dear Lina,

It was lovely to hear from you. All of us miss you very much. Mum and Dad are glad that you are slowly adjusting to life in a boarding school.

In your letter you complained about the compulsory co-curricular activities. Well, let me tell you that you can reap many benefits through active participation in these activities. Firstly, the various co-curricular activities help you become a better person (point 1). Participation in uniformed units, clubs and societies, sports and games will help you discover your talents and develop your character. You will become a more confident and well-rounded person. The strict rules and good behaviour expected of you as a member of a uniformed unit will instil discipline (point 2) in you. This is important if you are to become a law-abiding citizen.

Besides, you will learn good values (point 3) through the various co-curricular activities. You will learn about the importance of cooperation (point 4) and respect for others (point 5). These values are very important in a multi-racial society like ours.

You have always said that you admire great leaders like Nelson Mandela and Abraham Lincoln. Well, co-curricular activities will certainly help you to develop leadership skills (point 6). There will be ample opportunities to enable you to become a good leader. Besides learning how to plan events, you will learn to organise activities (point 7). Sometimes, you might even have to handle a challenging situation and this will teach you how to make on-the-spot decisions.

More importantly, co-curricular activities provide you with many opportunities (point 8) to help you develop social skills (point 9). As you know, a person with good social skills has an edge these days. Extra-curricular activities will also provide you with opportunities to take part in competitions (point 10) at various levels. Schools usually select their representatives for competitions at zone, state or national level by looking at their students’ performance in school-level competitions.

These activities also keep you healthy (point 11). Who knows, you might finally shed your baby fat! Most importantly, you will get a good testimonial (point 12) if you are active in co-curricular activities. This will definitely boost your chances when applying for a scholarship or a job.

There is no need for you to worry that participation in these activities will affect your grades. On the contrary, it has been proven that students who are actively involved usually do well academically.

I hope you will take the opportunities co-curricular activities provide to experience new things and discover your strengths.

I have to stop here. I have to study for my trial examination, which is in two weeks’ time. Till I hear from you, take care.

Your loving sister, Shuhada

Essay #6 Saddest Experience

"It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing." Intriguing it truly is how Shakespeare could bring out one's emotions through such doleful words. Nevertheless, it is true. Life is but an unfathomable tale of sorrow and misery, masked behind the sounds and faces of joy, leading only to the inevitable revelation of the truth, where one would realize that dreams are but an empty flask, easily shattered into oblivion.
It came like a spear, prickling my soul. Perhaps it was the blanket being too thin, if only I had added one, no two, no it just would not have sufficed. Before then, I had always imagined a campfire to be the ultimate source of warmth and comfort in dark times... I stood corrected. For all I knew at that point, I could've been lying naked in the midst of a blizzard, the unforgiving gelid winds wailing proudly as they struck despair down to my very core. Accompanied only by a surfeit of queasy sensation patrolling by my uvular. It was incontrovertibly a one-sided battle. One which no adolescent should have to face without an ally.

It must have been the fever, though one could have erroneously believed the source to be the merciless wind, howling plaintively across the campsite as it disturbed the rustling leaves, as if on purpose. The others have gone to restock on more wood to burn and I was left to rest in my tent. I would have gone with them had I not been cursed with this horrible fever at this wicked hour. Hiding from the coldness beneath the safety of my blanket was probably not the most courageous act, but it was a wise one. To follow them into the woods in my condition would be plain suicide.

Before long, the wind wailed even louder in an utmost sorrowful manner. I reached into my pocket in search for my pills, my lifeline to be blunt, as it kept my illness to a minimum. Somehow, as if things could not have gotten worse, they were not there, go figure. That was it, in a matter of moments the ascending fever would triumph over my natural resistance and incapacitate me, as would asphyxiation slowly sink in. Then, through the glass my memory a sliver of hope came to be. They must have still been with Percy. That fool wanted to 'take a look at them' earlier on and must have brought them along with him. It was simply a no-brainer, suicide or not, I must retrieve them, to endure the intensifying sickness would be worse than death itself.

With a long, deep breath and a whole lot of foolish bravery, I rushed out, embracing the tempest and broke off looking for Percy. The trees grew thicker as both light and warmth from the campfire dimmed and faded away into cold and black despair.

There was simply no time to adjust to the darkness. I scurried blindly forward towards who knows where, yelling out the names of my campmates as I shivered in the midst of grieve and fear. I had just about given up when a shout retaliated my efforts, it was of my name and I was sure the voice belonged to Percy. My tired eyes lifted and tried their best to search for the voice despite the overwhelming darkness. A dark figure spawned in the distance and I charged towards it, only to have it scream something in my direction, vaguely I assumed it to be in a warning tone. But unfortunately, the desperation for the illness to end got the best of me. And to be honest, I could not have cared less at that moment what the scream was all about.

It all happened in haste. My foot felt nothingness, my vision descended, adrenaline surged through my veins. Was it a hole or a cliff, I could not remember. Miraculously enough, I had survived the fall, but miracles do not just happen everyday without a price, and I had paid every last bit of it. Ever since then, I had been paralyzed from waist down. And now I sit patiently in a wheelchair, sharing my story every now and then, awaiting nothing but a sad end to my life.

Essay #7 Teenagers Don't Smoke

Smoking is one of the worst things teenagers can do to their bodies. Yet every day, almost 5000 teenagers under age of 18 try smoking for the first time.

No wonder, tobacco companies spend billions of dollar ever year on advertisements and other ways to make sure that these young people start smoking and buying their product. The companies count on them to become hooked for it keeps in them in business.

The nicotine in cigarettes is a poisonous drug. It even be used to kill insects. Nicotine and dozens of other poisonous chemicals in tobacco can cause illness like heart problems and certain kinds of cancer. Some of these illness take years to develop but others can show up right away.

Generally, smoking makes a teenager's body less fit and more susceptible to infections. For example, teenagers who smoke are much more likely to get a cold on pneumonia. Each time they like up, it hurts their heart, lungs and brain. And the longer the smoke, the worse the damage becomes.

Essay #8 Admire

Lady Gaga, stage name for Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta is a recording artist in New York, United State America (USA). She developed interest in the music industry at an early age as demonstrated by her interest and ability to play the piano while she was 4 years old of age. Later, she joined New York University where she studied music opened up her song writing skills. She composed analytical papers and essays that focused mainly on social issues, politics, religion and arts. Then, she withdrew from school to concentrate more on her career.

Anyhow, there are three quotes from her that I think it is really meaningful to me. "You have to be unique, different and shine in your own way", "Do not allow people to dim your shine because they are blinded. Tell them to put on some sunglasses" and "Whether life's disabilities, left you outcast, bullied or teased rejoice and love yourself." It is no wonder this lady from a good Italian New York, turned into the exhibitionist, multi-talented singer songwriter with a talent or flair for theatrics that she is today, Lady Gaga.

She is openly unique, creative, does not follow stereotypes and more surprisingly she does not care what others think about her and she is doing what she loves to do. She also takes frequent political standings to support her ideals. She is a driving force in today's society and I admire her because she is easy for me to relate to. I find a deep connection to her, in the sense that she shares my personality. The major reason I admire her is the way she expresses herself. She is openly quirky and thrives off the fact that people think so. I relate this because I also like to express myself in a way that most people consider odd. Despite she receives constant criticism, she maintains her pride wisely. The other reason I admire her is the way she takes a stance. She is frequently seen promoting her ideas and supporting various national movements.

To be quite frank, I have never been one to openly admit that I love this lady who wears scandalous clothing and basically acts like a diva a lot of the time. However, she is different for some reasons. She seems genuine and strong in her quaint dresses. I believe she does it all for herself and also her fans. This lady has done so many performances on so many different shows. Besides, every time I see an interview with Lady Gaga, she really inspires me. She has a straightforward way of communicating that I love. You can say she is annoyed with or in love with the interviewer because she does not hold anything back. I love that type of honesty.

Despite her big personality and quirky dresses, I would have never paid attention to her if it were not for the fact that I love her music. It makes me want to sing along and dance every time. Whenever it gets stuck in my head, it puts me in a good mood. It is because the rhythm of the sound is really catchy and the lyrics are overwhelming and passionate. Plus, with her voice of an angel that soothes to my soul.

Essay #9 Finish up Story

Write a story that ends with: To this day, I wondered if I did the right thing in accepting the offer.

I was still sleeping when suddenly my hand phone rang. The ringing tone broke the silence of the night. I slid off my bed and quickly accepted the call. It was so weird to get a call at the wee hours of the morning. I heard the voice at the other end of the line and ascertained who the caller was. The voice that I talked to at other side of the phone was my boss, Messy.
“Why do you call me in the middle of the night? Anything happening ?” I queried.

“Sorry to disturb your sleep but there is an important assignment. I need your help again,” Messy answered.

“It’s ok. What needs my professional skill?” I joked.

“Ha, ha. ” Messy gave a dry laugh and then he continued, “Just now a man in black jacket came to see me. He asked our organization to make a delivery. Tomorrow morning, come to my office and I will tell you the other information then. Go back to your beauty sleep and I hope you have a nice dream. Bye,” said Messy and the line went dead.

I hung up the phone. I could not go back to sleep immediately. I wondered what the new job would be. I tossed and turned. Gradually I fell into a sleep.

On the next day, the sun rose with a ball of fire. I woke up and got dressed. I wore my favourite black silk shirt, black long trousers and a black Italian leather shoes. I looked at my appearance in the mirror and I liked what I looked. Then I drove my black shiny BMW to my boss’s office.

Upon arrival, Messy invited me to sit down and began to talk to me about of the importance of this task. My job seemed very easy. All I had to do was to deliver the things from Messy’s client and safely send them to the destination. Having done that, then my work was considered accomplished. In my line of duty, I had had delivered many kinds of things such as weapon, bomb and others. But this time, Messy warned me that I might encounter danger during my job because some people might try to stop me from delivering “the things” safely to the destination.

“Can you do it? You can refuse if you don’t want to,” said Messy.

“Don’t worry. It’s ok. I can do it,” I answered confidently.

“So your final decision is to accept the job, right?” asked my boss.

“Sure, I am a pro. Every time I did a nice job, didn’t I?” I said.

Messy nodded as he smiled. After that he gave the two things that he had received to me. It was a brown envelope and a small green box. Seriously, he reminded me the rules of our profession : 1. Never ask questions, just deliver the things. 2. Never open the packages from the clients for they are classified as confidential.

I looked at the envelope and I realized that the destination was in Singapore. I booked the next flight and flew to Singapore. When I went to the address that was on the envelope, I found the house unoccupied. According to the neighbour, the owner, Hamid who was a scientist had moved away six months ago. Hamid had an ex-wife, Mary who lived in Australia. They gave me Mary’s address in Australia.

I quickly went to Australia to find Hamid’s ex-wife. His ex-wife had black silky hair blue eyes and rosy cheeks. She gave me an address and said that her ex-husband might be there. She also gave me a paper with a code but I could not understand what the meaning was. As I left her, I sent the code to my friend who could decode it. After a while, he telephoned me to say that the code actually represented the chemical things. Because of my curiosity, I broke the rules and opened the box. Inside the box, there was a test tube with the chemical and labeled “Biochemical DNA”.

I hastened my pace to the address that Mary gave to me. It was an old warehouse. As I entered the building, I saw many big test tubes inside the building. It looked like a laboratory and somebody was carrying out the experiment. As I approached nearer, suddenly I saw a naked person who looked similar to my son was inside one of the test tubes. I could not believe what I saw and I tried to convince myself he was not my son, Harry. No, it was somebody else! As I saw the label on the table, I froze. It was clearly written -‘Harry Bond’. “NO! Impossible!” I cried. Harry was pursuing his studies in Camford University. However, the truth was just in front of my eyes. I swore that I would bomb the building so that my son would not suffer after they changed him into a beast. He would be better off dead than become a beast which would kill people.

The bombs were put in every corner of building. Tears roll down my furrowed cheeks as I ignited the bomb. Finally, the laboratory was destroyed and I lost my son. Feeling sad, I went back to my country, Malaysia. If only I had declined to accept the work, I wouldn’t have to know the truth. If only I had refused to do the job, I wouldn’t have to kill my son with both my hands. To this day, I wondered if I did the right thing in accepting the offer.

Friends,
Do you want to be an excellent teenager or just an average teenager? How many of you want to be an excellent teenager? I am sure all of you want to be an excellent teenager. So here is how to be one.

Firstly, we must lead to a healthy life style. In order to do so, we must eat according to the balanced diet. Consume less oily food but eat more vegetable and fruit. Moreover, we must exercise at least twice a week. We also must not smoke the harmful and deadly cigarettes as they could cause many dangerous effect. Therefore, my dear friends, do not smoke a lot but eat healthily and exercise a lot.

Boys and girls,
The next step to be an excellent teenager is by choosing our friends wisely. If we chose to be friends with a smart and kind teenager, then, we will too be kind and smart like them. On the contrary, if we choose to hang out with some useless teenagers, we will too end up useless like them. So girls and boys, choose your friends wisely!

Aside from living a healthy life style and choosing our friends wisely, we must also respect the elders. Such as parents and teachers. Even the Form 5 students are counted as elders. It is very crucial for us to respect them, especially our parents since they have done a lot for us. Plus, you guys do not want to go to hell for disrespecting your elders.

Teachers and friends,
To become and excellent teenager, we must be a good listener. Listen well to our parents', teachers' or friends' advice. Our parents and teachers know better than us so we should listen to them.

Last but not least, make reading your habit. It is not necessary for us to read educational books. We can read comic books, magazine, novels or whatever tickles our fancy. What more important is that you read because by reading we can learn a lot of things.

Essay #12 Cell phones - One of Our Greatest Technologies Misused

Cell phones have lost their meaning over the years. These small devices were once developed to get in contact with someone else in case of emergencies, and now talking on the phone while driving has turned out to be a way of life for millions of American drivers. More than 85 percent of the 100 million cell-phone subscribers frequently talk on the phone during driving.(www.smartmotorist.com) Talking on the cell phone while driving should be illegal, because of the dangers they cause. Driving while using the cell phone is one of the major problems here in the US. Cell phones should not be used while driving. This matter is too dangerous to let it go unnoticed.

According to the essay, Yes, Prohibit Their Use, which appeared on the congressional quarterly’s web site on March 16, 2001, the Harvard Center for risk analysis printed a study in 1999. They appointed a crash risk factor to using cell phones. In the summer of 2000 it came out to 450 to 1,000 fatalities each year. The NHTSH says that for every fatality, there are 666 property-damage and injury-producing crashes. There are about 300,000 and 650,000 different crashes due to cell phones! This same essay states that Japan is one of the 14 countries banning the use of handheld cell phones while driving. The accidents caused by the use of cell phones dropped by 75 percent the next month, proving cell phones are not necessary parts of the driving nature.

There are major dangers connected with driving and cell phone use. Drivers have to take their eyes off the road while dialing. Also, drivers can get so deep into their conversations that their ability to concentrate may be dangerously limited. This jeopardizes the safety of the people inside the vehicle, and the pedestrians outside. In order to drive safely, the driver should be able to put 100% of his or her focus on the road. Cell phones are simply a huge distraction while driving.

It is understandable that there are some cases where the use of a cell phone is needed. In these cases, I agree with the author of Yes, Prohibit Their Use, the driver should pull-over somewhere safe to use the phone. If someone receives an incoming call, he should wait until the car has come to a complete stop. Then he should proceed to use the phone. If he feels that the emergency is urgent enough to take action right away, then the person should use the hands free headset. Only in emergencies should cell phones be used.

Some people argue that there are other distractions other than cell phones. While using a cell phone when driving may not be the most unsafe distraction, studies prove that it is the most common cause of car crash accident, and common cause of death here in the US.

The use of cell phones while driving should be banned in Philadelphia, because many people die due to distraction of cell phones. Cell phone distraction causes 2,600 deaths and 330,000 injuries in the United States every year. (www.livescience.com/technology). Another reason to not use the cell phone while driving is devastating the many lives of the victims and their families in the case of an accident.

When driving, cell phones should not be allowed. Help the statistics decrease not increase.
